Choosing the Right Contractor
Selecting a good contractor is a very important step in your process.
Here are some tips on how to choose one that will best fit your needs.
Home improvements are a long term investment, you want to make sure you spend
enough time up front to avoid hours of aggravation later.
Trustworthy
Choose a contractor that has been referred to you by someone you trust.
Certified and Licensed
Ask to see the contractor's certifications, licenses and employee
training documents.
Timely
Make sure you discuss scheduling to make sure the work can be started
and finished in a time frame that fits your schedule. (Remember as roofers our
jobs rely on good weather, any unexpected weather change will cause delays.)
Organized
Make sure to receive a detailed proposal and contract. Any changes in
that contract will be subject to a change order. Proper documentation will
provide you with confidence that your home improvement project will go as
smoothly as possible.
Insured
Check the contractor's insurance. Reputable contractors carry two
types of insurance; liability and workers compensation. Liability
insurance will protect the homeowner should the contractor damage your
property or injure someone on your property, or neighboring properties.
Workers compensation protects the homeowner should a worker get injured
during the job, also provides for medical expenses and lost income.
Without proper insurance the financial responsibility falls on the
homeowner.
Friendly
Check references and ask how complaints are handled. Reputable
contractors will have a proven track record and will be pleased to show you
a list of previous customers. Even the best of contractors run
into problems, it is important to ask how they handle those situations.
Although there is no guarantee that your roofing project will
be problem free, a planned approach is the best way to avoid problems.
Sit down with each contractor for at least an hour so that you fully
understand your projects needs.
